Shut Out Cancer

Calling all Section 1 Varsity Ice Hockey Goalies.  For the 2017-18 season, I am honored and humbled to launch the season long Shut Out Cancer Fundraiser.

I have been a goalie since I was six years old and have enjoyed competing at all levels throughout our local area.  Being my last year, I wanted to bring the goalies of Section 1 together to fight a great cause that is extremely close to my heart...raising funds to support innovative breast cancer research.

In 2013, my mom's younger sister Lauren was diagnosed with metastatic triple negative breast cancer. After growing up as neighbors, Lauren and her family eventually relocated to California for work. Despite the distance, our families remained incredibly close-kint. Lauren was like a second Mom to me. As her condition was worsening, my whole family was there to support my Aunt in her waning moments.

I still remember the night so vividly. It was January 6th, 2016, and we had just lost 2-0 to Mamaroneck at Hommocks. Coach Mancuso pulled me out of the locker room and told me my Dad was going to take me home from the game. I instantly knew why he said that. I quietly got undressed and made my way to the car. After a few minutes of silence, my dad finally confirmed what I'd been thinking: Aunt Lauren passed away. The following day we were in California for the funeral. To this day, I wear a pink sticker with the initials LJM (Lauren Jill Melnick) on the back of my helmet to honor and remember Aunt Lauren.

For the 2017-18 season, I am hoping that Section 1 Goalies will step up to Shut Out Cancer.  I invite all Section 1 varsity goalies to purchase a custom designed Section 1 goalie decal (see above) for $10.  All proceeds will go to the Tower Cancer Research Foundation, a 501(c) 3 foundation established by the renowned oncologists of Tower Hematology Oncology Medical Group, dedicated to transforming the cancer journey through research and support.  In addition, for every shut out you attain this season (regular and playoffs), $25 will be contributed to the Tower Cancer Research Foundation from an anonymous donor.  We hope to bring on additional donors/sponsors throughout the year to make each of your shut outs even more lucrative to the Foundation.

Big Thanks to TAG Sports Graphics for donating the decals
